Field Notes

Description:

This is a small bird with a black cap and bib. It has gray wings and a white underside.

Habitat:

Can be found in woodlands, open woods, swamps, and urban areas. I found this little guy in my back yard.

Notes:

Fun Facts: 1. Carolina and Black-capped chickadees can hybridize. It is estimated that the two species diverged about 2.5 million years ago. 2. John J. Audubon named this bird in the year 1834. 3. Between 1966-2015 the Carolina Chickadee had a 17% decline in population.
