Field Notes

Description:

Caps: 4.5-12cm diameter, 2.5-4 cm height. Surface is lightbrown with some darker patches cause by felty hairs. entire surface is felty. Surface smoth and slightly moist. Interior flesh is initially pale yellows blueing instantly and fading to light green tan. taste bitter. margin smooth and entire. spore surface initially bright yellow (blueing instantly) fades to light light blue green. tube mouths round, 2-3 tubes/mm. surface not level. tubes separate easily from cap flesh. tube depth 3mm-2cm. unable to obtain spore print (picked too young?)

Stem: 4-8cm length, top width is 1.5x3cm -- 2.5x7 cm. bulging in lower middle to 3x4cm -- 4x7 cm (cross section is oval) below bulge stem tapers to base where attachedto other stems. stem surface colour at first bright yellow, fading to mottled brown. surface lightly reticulate over top half (and sometimes lower). felty surface and inside flesh is solid and like cap.

Habitat:

In grass near pond. Trees nearby include oak, bamboo + others

Notes:

Boletus albidus = B. radicans

Jacques Beck Ceccalbi believes that this is Boletus appendiculatus which is a synonym for Boletus radicans var. appendiculatu. Merci Jacques.

When I first worked on this mushroom I thought it could also be Boletus coniferarum or Boletus calopus
