Field Notes

Description:

About 35mm overall; big furry palps; attractive cream-grey-black-brown patterns on the thorax; some small spots on abdomen.

Habitat:

Searching for prey on a stone wall at midnight.

This isn't Lycosidae. The eyes are not correct for that family. Lycosidae will have a pair of eyes that are larger than the others and are foward-facing. From your picture, I would think this would be Miturgidae, genus Miturga, of which you have 29 native species.
Ha! I agree it does look similar. At 35mm including legs they would have to be really tiny birds.
I could be wrong but this looks like a bird eating turantula spider
