Field Notes

Description:

A large eucalyptus was felled by a storm in the nearby national park. Lying across a walking track it had to be cut into sections and partly removed. Less than a week after the forest crew had done the job the centre of what seemed a fairly healthy tree, produced these hairy bracket fungi, each about 50mm wide. The underside revealed convoluted pores which were producing copious amounts of a milky slimy fluid. The tops were very coarse, red furry.

Habitat:

On the recently cuts ends of a large eucalyptus trunk in a national park.
