Field Notes

Description:

Fairly large bird, (L= 35". 2.7 lbs, WS= 45") Beautifully patterned! This is a male, as seen by the black neck and head. Female has a buffy tan head, neck, and upper breast. Bill is dagger-sharp, feet webbed.

Habitat:

My Sibley guide says it's found "in swamps and wooded ponds".... but here in Florida, I see them most frequently in rivers and springs.
