Yellow Rat Snakes
Pantherophis alleghaniensis
34.4866, -79.1959
Field Notes
Description:
3 yellow rat snakes, 1 female and 2 males. All 3 were over 4' long, olive green with long dark olive green stripes down the length of their bodies.
Habitat:
Maintenance shed surrounded by mixed forest.
Notes:
I received a call from a concerned co-worker who saw his chair move on its own in the maintenance shed. He then discovered 3 large snakes wrapped around the bottom of the chair making it move. He thought the one was trying to kill the other one though and wanted me to save it. I was able to inform him that that was not what the snake was doing. He had discovered a breeding trio. I carried the two active breeders outside together and they never unlocked. The second male I took out separately (in the final two photos).
