Field Notes

Description:

Male
being about 22 mm in overall length with a wingspan of approximately
45 mm.
The legs terminate in a single large claw that
with the last tarsal segment folds back against the more
basal part of the tarsus to form a raptorial appendage.

Habitat:

Balsa , Atenas , Costa rica
Tropical Rain forest.
Adult bittacids may be found in low, shaded, herbaceous
growth or grasses but, unless hunted in these habitats,
are most likely to be seen around lights at night.

Notes:

Bittacus spatulatus parece mucho al Bittacus banksi en tamaño y en venación y coloración de las alas, y su área de distribución conocida se cae por completo dentro de la de Bittacus banksi. Los machos de Bittacus spatulatus pueden ser reconocidos por la rotación peculiar y ensanchamiento subapical de los apéndices epiandriales. es esta característica combinada con la superficie cóncava mesal superficialmente, vuelto hacia arriba como una espátula, lo que le da nombre a la especie. El distal tercio de los apéndices epiandriales en Bittacus banksi, aunque algo ampliado, no es particularmente cóncava en la superficie mesal, y los apéndices epiandrial se encuentran ordinariamente muy juntos, no divergentes como en Bittacus spatulatus.
