Field Notes

Description:

Sexually dimorphic. Male is black with rusty orange sides, female is brown with rusty orange sides. Both sexes have white undersides. Male exhibits white outer tail feathers. Usually found together throughout mating season and while raising chicks.

Habitat:

Deciduous and mixed forest. Occasional suburban visitor to winter bird feeders. Feeds mostly on ground.
