Field Notes

Description:

Velveteen light tan spider with a dark brown line down the center of the body and dark brown bands at the leg joints. It is large, with up to a three-inch leg spread.

Habitat:

Spotted at Tamarac near the Visitor Center, along the wooded edges in tall grass.

Notes:

Nursery Web Spiders get their name from the protection a female provides for her egg sac. She carries it around in her jaws until the eggs near hatching, then she hide it & spins a silken enclosure around it. She will defend her young until they disperse after their first molt. These spiders are poisonous & will kill tiny fish & insects, but not kill pets or people.
