Field Notes

Description:

Very dark Coprinoid type. clustered around the stump of an unknown tree. Largest caps were about 50mm across. All were very dark brown to black. Cap shapes ranged from shallow cones to almost flat disks.

Habitat:

In a suburban back yard.

Notes:

Different from Coprinellus disseminatus? but a similar gregarious habit. Gone to black mush two days later. Yet to find this ID... <br>

C atramentaria seems to be initially much paler than these. In pic 4 you can see even the youngest caps are dark brown. Also C atramentaria seems to have a longer 'hanging' shape to the cap. Even these youngest ones had firm, flatish triangular shaped caps... and you're right I can't find any reliable records of C atramentaria here although this is in a suburban garden and we have seen several exotic species in the last ten years which shouldn't be here. Humans move stuff everywhere these days. Spores on clothes or in luggage or organic materials would not surprise me.

It looks close to Coprinopsis atramentaria, but I don't think that occurs in Australia.

Could be, but for some reason they look more like the closely related genus Coprinopsis to me. It's one of the two.
