Field Notes

Description:

These are female argus. Males have more fascinating feathers and longer tail. Males attract females by uttering loud call that sounds like "kuwaw...kuwaw". In Bahasa Indonesia, great argus is also known as "Kuau" regarding its vocalisation.
If a female is attracted, it will approach the male's dancing ground, called lek, then male will dance. The dance is kind of its fitness indicator.
The lek can be easily recognized in the forest even if the male is absent as the lek is very clean from leaf litter.

Habitat:

Primary forest.
