Field Notes

Description:

Mostly black, medium-sized crow, with robust bill.
Head, nape and breast sides are greyish, contrasting with the black body plumage. Forehead, chin and throat are black as are the legs.

Habitat:

My neighbour has a shade for his rooftop terrace and large diameter plastic pipes collect rainwater and drain it during the monsoons. You can see a corner pipe in the photo...many birds nest inside pipes (sparrows and different types of mynahs mostly) especially during summer. I see crows stick their heads halfway in and caw....then, they listen. They cock their heads to one side and listen.I think they are hunting for fledglings which sometimes venture out hoping to catch a little breeze. It must be killing hot inside the pipes. A few years ago a crow dragged out an almost ready to fly sparrow chick from inside a smaller pipe.

Thank, Tukup. Crows are intelligent birds...and that beak can be cruel.
Great catch Sukanya. That bill looks like it's a heavy duty one. Thanks.
