Dark Brand Bushbrown
Mycalesis mineus philippina
15.456, 119.922
Field Notes
Description:
Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Mycalesis mineus philippina Moore, 1892. This specimen is slightly tattered around the apex of the rear wings, but this is very common at this time of year when there are strong and blustery winds which can cause crash landings. These butterflies look extremely fragile, but it is amazing that they survive at all in severe tropical weather conditions.
Habitat:
Spotted this afternoon at about 4:00pm in our backyard, resting on Painted Nettle (Coleus scutellarioides), in the shade of some Mahogany Trees.
