Description:
Hippocampus severnsi is one of the smallest known seahorses, reaching a maximum adult size of just 1.3 cm. It is usually dark brown in colour with a large red patch covering its shoulder. This species is known from Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
This specimen is less than 1 cm in length, including uncurled tail!
And this was already one of the bigger among a cluster of 5 Severensi Pygmy Seahorses found in a block of coral.
Notes:
Severensi Pygmy Seahorse was newly discovered in 2008.
Previously, Pygmy Seahorses like Bargibanti and Denise were associated with Sea Fans, which they lives on.
However, the discovery of H.severensi together with H.pontohi. H.satome indicates that Pygmy seahorses do lives outside of Sea fans, which makes them much much more difficult to find!
