Hi JKFrey, this guy was seen at the country club golf course in Raton, NM while a friend and I were birding. Hope this helps!
I agree that this photo is of an eastern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger). This species was introduced into New Mexico and its distribution is poorly known. I'm interested in more information on what city you observed it. thanks! PS-great photo! http://web.nmsu.edu/~jfrey/mamlistkeys.html
