Golden-Backed Snipe Fly
Chrysopilus davisi
36.4543, -83.5694
Field Notes
Description:
A black fly with dark wings and a gold patch on its thorax, C. davisi closely resembles the species Chrysopilus thoracicus, but lacks the silvery hairs on its back that C. thoracicus has. Both species are golden-backed snipe flies.
Habitat:
C. davisi, for the most part, is found in temperate forests. This one was spotted indoors - my guess is it made its way indoors seeking shelter from a recent severe storm, but I could be wrong.
Notes:
The coloration and shape of the insect give it the appearance of a wasp-mimic. The insect was about the size of a US nickel.
