Field Notes

Description:

Fairly large sized Crane Fly. Brown with patterned wings. Crane flies are often called "Mosquito Hawks" with the belief that they eat mosquitoes. The truth is most adult Crane Flies don't feed at all and live long enough to reproduce. They are harmless.

Habitat:

Cedar Point County Park, NY.

Notes:

This was the only shot I was able to get as it was landed a bit too high for me to reach. ID should be possible from the wing patterns. I just haven't had time yet to do the research.
