Field Notes

Description:

A large butterfly, with a wing span ranging from 2 1/2 - 4 inches in size. The upperside of the male is tan to orange with black scales on the forewings. Females are tawny and are darker than the males. Underside of hindwings have wide pale submarginal bands and large silver spots.

Habitat:

Spotted on Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), which was growing in a meadow at Bent of the River Audubon.
