Field Notes

Description:

Baby pink fruiting bodies associated with small but showy flowers. Epiphytic plant has large, matte leaves (8” in length, perhaps). The fruit turns navy blue/deep purple with age.

Habitat:

Cliffside rainforest with moderate shade on the Onomea Bay Trail. Native to the Philippines, China, South Asia and some western Pacific islands.

Notes:

This might be Medinilla myriantha or M. cumingii, but there are hundreds of species in the genus, so it’s hard to say. Medinilla, whom the plant was named for, was the Governor of Mauritius.
