Eucalyptus Weevil
Gonipterus scutellatus
-37.8964, 145.298
Field Notes
Description:
Looking like a dried-up gnarly stem gall, this little weevil was only 11 mm. It had a rough knobbly exterior, with tow pale brown lateral patches and legs covered with dense short setae. A broad white mark runs medially on the thorax and upper part of the elytra.
Habitat:
Eucalyptus tree
Notes:
It was funny to watch this weevil flick from side to side on the branch when my camera approached him.
This weevil was introduced to other countries by accident through gum sapling export - it is now a pest to the eucalyptus industry in most places.
