Field Notes

Description:

Today's unexpected spotting: two young stags observed on an opposite side of hill, playfully running through agricultural fields below the forest line. They looked undisturbed, and we were able to follow them through binoculars for 10 minutes, before they disappeared in some forested areas. They are large deer species, and mainly dark brown at this time of the year. It was very difficult to estimate the size from our point of view, but from literature, these young stags can reach about 2m in body length (without tail), and about 130cm in shoulder height.

Habitat:

Edges of mixed lowland forest, on slopes of Jura mountain range, where slopes descend to Geneva lake valley. Beside forest, this is very rural environment, small towns and agriculture.

Notes:

Pics are not very sharp, sorry about that - handheld light camera with using large zoom...
