Little Sweet Betsy
Trillium cuneatum
34.76, -83.71
Field Notes
Description:
The plant has three broad, mottled "leaves" surrounding a sessile maroon, bronze, green, or yellow flower. (These leaf-like structures are actually bracts subtending the flower.) Despite their morphological origins, the bracts have external and internal structure similar to that of a leaf, and function in photosynthesis.
Habitat:
Native USA (AL, GA, IL, KY, MD, MS, NC, PA, SC, TN, VA)
rich, mostly upland woods, especially on limestone soils; also old fields, ditches, or other disturbed sites
Notes:
Spotted at Anna Ruby Falls in Helen, GA
