Ash Gray Blister Beetle
Epicauta floridensis
35.9175, -83.1253
Field Notes
Description:
Light gray beetle about 5/8" long, plus antennae. As seen in the photo, they eat leaves! This poor tree looks like green Swiss cheese. They destroy gardens; there were two of them on this leaf, eating it away rapidly. The insect-less photo shows more damage on a different tree, different day.
Habitat:
Hilly, wooded.
Notes:
The blister beetles secrete a substance that causes blisters on the skin. Big blisters! The reference site has a photo of an individual who squashed a blister beetle on his neck. Something you definitely wouldn't want to do.
