Field Notes

Description:

large grebes with black heads and backs, white necks, and a yellow bill. There were about 30 in a flock on the lake. They were doing a mating dance- a pair would run on top of the water with necks in a S shape.

Habitat:

Reservoir/Lake. These pictures were taken at 7 am. I went back to the lake after lunch, and they weren't there.

You can tell the difference between the two species by looking at what color feathers are right around the eye. On a Western grebe the area around the eye is black, and on a Clark's grebe the area around the eye is white. Hope this helps :)
