Field Notes

Description:

Some type of hawk. It was quite large probably about 18-24 inches from head to tail.

Habitat:

Northwest Michigan backyard.

Notes:

This hawk landed on our deck that surrounds our pool. He sat there perched for about 20 minutes just looking at the pool and the nearby woods. He then flew into the woods. He came back later and perched in the same spot looking the other direction into the yard.

We have several type of bird of prey the frequent the sky above but have never had one come this close to the yard or to us.

Of course my bird feeders stayed empty for several hours since he was in range.

I would assume he is either a Red-Tailed Hawk or a possibly a Coopers Hawk. They are both common here. I did not see his undercarriage when he flew away to determine his markings.

We think maybe he has a nest in the back woods.
