Field Notes

Description:

named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

I was so happy to get this spotting! This was my first for a Malachite and it wasn't easy. This butterfly was in an open area along the road in Rio Claro reserve but whenever I approached to within 3m (10'), it would fly off. I chased it around for a while and eventually this was the best shot I could get, which I did crop for a better look.
