Description:
"Furrow Spider" - An orbweaver about 1/2 inch long with 2 body parts. The large, rounded, ivory abdomen with brown markings in a fountain pattern looks shiny, almost glassy. It has a brown body with hairy legs, though there is a lot of variation between specimens. Not dangerous. Nocturnal.
Habitat:
Usually in moist areas, though commonly found in urban/suburban areas along the sides of houses.
Notes:
Spotted Sept. 29, 2013 in Central Indiana, U.S.A. I took this photo of a Furrow Spider feasting on a moth at the side of our house near the garage door at 9:20 p.m. This spider's web was built between the corner of the house and a large garbage can sitting nearby under one of the garage lights that attracts lots of insects. The spider's abdomen looked hard and shiny, almost as though encased in glass. I only see this spider come out at night.
