Field Notes

Description:

Large moth, sides of abdomen and hind wings marked with bright pink. Otherwise very cryptic, even on a concrete pillar.

Habitat:

Found resting on a concrete pillar at the Kansas Welcome Center, 12 miles east of the Colorado border on Interstate 70. Surrounding habitat is mostly treeless shortgrass prairie, but ornamental trees have been planted at this rest stop.

Notes:

This was one of hundreds of moths, beetles, and other insects remaining after being attracted to lights the night before.
