Description:
Snake's Head fritillary is a fairly common flower but rarely found in the wild, it belongs to the lily family. The flower's purple and white checkered head droops down from the end of the stalk. The petals are soft when fresh but soon become dry and the structure becomes similar to a paper lantern. This flower may also come in white form (not pictured here)

This is a fascinating flower I've only seen once, I believe its colours and structure are related to its function for a special form of pollination.
