Field Notes
Description:
In March and April, the mother
monarch butterfly lays her eggs on milkweed plants like the ones shown. The eggs are green and very small.
After a few days they hatch into tiny dark caterpillars, also called the larvae.
The baby caterpillar stays on the milkweed plant, because it is the only thing it eats. After about two weeks, the caterpillar will be fully-grown and find a place to attach itself so that it can start changing into a butterfly called the process of metamorphosis.
It will attach itself upside down on a stem or a leaf using silk and transform into a chrysalis.
