Field Notes

Description:

large tarantula, about 5" legtip to legtip, beautiful iridescent purple markings on the carapace

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

I hiked the 2km road from the main highway to the visitors centre in Rio Claro all 3 nights I stayed there. On one side was a steep drop off to a river and the other side an angled slope with loose soil and vegetation. I would hike in one direction with my UV light and then come back using my LED headlamp. The UV light revealed dozens of scorpions and my LED showed that there was also a lot of scorpions all along this slope.
