Field Notes

Description:

Cream with splotches or orange and distinct, large eyespots.

Habitat:

Just outside the Ule Ethnic Resort, Ule, Ladakh, India. I was waiting for the luggage to be loaded into the car and stolled down to where the lane met the road. There, on a flowering weed in a neglected patch of land, I spotted this butterfly.

Notes:

Thanks Nuwan....I was hoping you'd see this and help. Many Thanks.

Chief, Ladakh was incredible! We saw quite a few butterflies. I was impressed too...here we were on high altitude medication and there they were flitting around.
I am so jealous of you Sukanya for visiting Ladakh! And this butterfly lives there 18000 feet high?
Right now it seems a very far off dream.......
Do visit Ladakh before rampant tourism takes its toll.
Fascinating! The Northern most I have been to is Ranthambore and the Triangle. Delhi, Jaipur, Agra.
Yes Hema...and it is really amazing how much wildlife this apparently barren land supports...I saw butterflies at Khardungla...18000 feet high...and gulls on Pangong Lake that has no fishes or vegetation.
It's location really adds to the beauty. With glaciers and rivers flowing by!!
This was my first visit and I am still reeling from the stark beauty. But I am really concerned about the effect of uneducated but DEMANDING urban tourism....the need for flushable toilets and showers plus buffet of food items brought from far away to suit sophisticated palates...big buildings on fragile soil...it may just go the Badrinath way, I am afraid. Use of solar energy in a big way is a plus.
Is it still as awesome as it was before?
Yes Hema...went to Leh and adjoining areas including Nubra Valley and Pangong Lakes...shows I guess. Hee hee hee.
lovely! Did you just get back from a trip to Kashmir!!
