Description:
These fishes have two types of males and two modes of reproduction. Their color phase with red and yellow lateral stripes includes both males and females. These reproduce via egg dispersion (broadcast spawning). A high number of males and females raise up from the sea bottom in a dispersed group, releasing eggs and sperm in the upper part of the water column and then return to their normal habitat in the sea floors. It is thought they do this to protect their offspring. These mode of reproduction is most often seen in the summer.
In the second mode the females can switch to a male and this is called terminal male. This male is sexually dimorphic displaying different colors than the females and it reproduces by forming an harem and individually selecting females for insemination. If removed from the harem a new female turns into a new terminal male.
