Field Notes

Description:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae: Mycalesis janardana micromede Fruhstorfer, 1900. This butterfly, commonly known as the Janardana Bushbrown, may have a more sparse presence in my area than some of the other Browns. This is only my second spotting of the Janardana and I don't think I have seen others that I did not photograph. So, there is a world of difference between this species and, for example, the Common Five-ring which I see several times every day. Whether my assumption that it is rare, in this area, is correct or not doesn't really matter. What I can say, with confidence, is that this species has a kind of quiet beauty and subtle markings which make it rather special.

Habitat:

Spotted on foliage in a rice field which has been allowed to rest and grow wild this year.
