Description:

I believe these are larva from soldier flies (Family Stratiomyidae), probably of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lowerlighter/4317572617/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/lowerlighter/4317572617/

Habitat:

Spotted in a large compost heap, in a large semi-urban yard & garden, near a disturbed patch of remnant forest.
