Field Notes

Description:

Also called Halberdleaf Hibiscus, Scarlet Rose Mallow, Halberd-leaved Hibiscus, and Halberd-leaved Rose-mallow, these flowers have a distinct leaf whose point and curvature are reminiscent of old fashioned weaponry. If their bulbs don't tip you off already, Hibiscus overall is close kin to Okra. These bulbs need an ample amount of sunlight to open up, and when they do, they only last a day. Looks like I caught them a day early, but they were still beautiful. Unlike some other hibiscus and rosemallow, I can find no information on this one being used as medicine or tea.

Habitat:

Growing along rocks at the shore of the Arkansas River at Cadron Settlement park. It was between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit between evening and sundown and it had just rained the day prior.
