Field Notes

Description:

Large camouflaged grasshopper. Approximately 3 inches in length (not including antennae).

Habitat:

Western Australia red rock desert.

Notes:

I really only saw this on the "second look". Even sitting on a large rock, it was so well camouflaged that I thought it was just another bit of weathered wood.

Thanks Mark. It's one of my favorite 'mimic' photos. I figured as much, Martin. Actually, my first NOAH spotting ever was a Deadleaf grasshopper (from Tassie). http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/2655004
Sorry, I assumed you were in Tassie like you usually are. Maybe you will find one there too?
We spotted this in WA, years ago, while looking for a rock art site. We found the art, and a fair few critters as well. I love Australia.
This seems to occcur on the mainland http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_grasshoppers/BarkMmicing.htm here are two suspected nymphs http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/37886007 http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/19563303
