Field Notes

Description:

Antlion (larvae) that I scooped up with a shovel. Typical antlion traps are shown in the last two photos. Their prey walk into the trap, and as they struggle to climb out the antlions come from underneath to capture them, sometimes spraying dirt to make their prey fall deeper.

Habitat:

Sandy area in a shady suburban yard.
