Scarlet Oak
Quercus coccinea
35.0435, -85.2136
Field Notes
Description:
The acorns of oaks are edible, but their tannin content makes them bitter, with members of the red oak group having higher tannin content. Fortunately, tannins are readily soluble in water, once this bitterness is removed acorns can make a palatable meal, roasted, or added to breads. Additionally, the "waste" water may be used as an antiseptic or antifungal wash.
Habitat:
urban greenway
