Description:

I found this in a dry creek bed with no other bones nearby. I was thinking some kind of bird.

Hi Brett, this is a tough one! It's definitely a mammal pelvis! I am leaning toward a canine pelvis of some kind, most likely a fox.The obturator foramen (2 holes) are generally rounder in canines and more elongated in deer. Even thought the obturator foramen appear to be more elongated in this picture, the wider, short stature of the pelvis and the shallow pubic arch points me toward a fox. It also appears to be an older animal because the pelvis is very well fused. In young animals it is usually in two pieces. (Even more pieces - 4-6 in baby animals!) Does that ID fit with the size of the pelvis you found?
