Field Notes

Description:

About 25mm long with a long, yellow and black abdomen and yellow and black legs. Some dark tinting in the wings.

Habitat:

On acacia leaves (Acacia longifolia?) in a large nature reserve.

Notes:

Very inactive possibly due to cold snap after a week of warm weather. Probably Ichneumon (thanks John La Salle)...

Not a Chalcidoidea - note that there are lots of veins and closed cells in the wings. In chalcids the venation is quite reduced - with no closed cells. I would say Ichneumonidae. Note the antennae in the first picture have more than 16 (in this case way more than 16) segments. With only a few exceptions this means Ichneumonidae or Braconidae. After that you pretty much have to see the wing venation to tell these families apart unless you happen to recognise them.
