Field Notes

Description:

The beautiful Painted lady has unique dorsal and ventral patterns which make it quite distinctive. This cosmopolitan species is a migrant, and for Europe starts from the extreme South and North Africa, to go northwards very early in the year and extend across all the continent.

Habitat:

Forest clearing rich in thistles and nettles, alt. 1400 m.

Notes:

This butterfly shows diverse habitats due to its migratory habit. It often gathers on thistle rich meadows or in gardens. It is also often found at altitude as here, and can be seen flying over passes as high as 2500 m.

You are correct about diverse habitats...one of the most prominent butterflies here in the Mojave Desert in the US is the Painted Lady. We also have a variation called the West Coast Lady. They migrate through here from the West Coast. Good Shot!
Glad you like it Satyen! Consider it a late birthday present :-)
