Description:

Several kelp fossils exposed in rock. Some nearly a meter long.

Habitat:

Spotted on a large exposed rock along the shore at Tongue Point Marine Sanctuary. About 10 ft above sea level.

Trace fossils made by some burrowing organism. Possilbly by a sand crab or sea urchin, both of which have been found in these rocks. These are in the Crescent Formation, about 50 million years old. The earliest confirmed fossils of kelp are from California and only about 15 million years old.
Amazing spotting. Nice find, Brian, and yes, I agree - more fossils please :)
At the end of the kelp on the left - the holdfast is visible.
