Field Notes

Habitat:

This copulating pair, of Common Bushbrowns, was spotted in the rice field behind our house.

Notes:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Mycalesis perseus caesonia Wallengren, 1860. At this time of year, in the Philippines, it is just about half way through the rainy season. So, these two Common Bushbrowns are in their wet season forms. I have not yet learned how to distinguish the genders of butterflies of this species. As you can see, in the photos, one is much lighter in colour than the other, but I am not sure if this colour difference identifies the sex. I have been, perhaps wrongly, under the impression that the colours are variable, regardless of gender.
