Field Notes

Description:

Hesperia comma can be distinguished from other species of Golden skippers sharing its distribution areas by the numerous white spots on the underside hindwings. This butterfly prefers hills and mountains. Often seen at high levels in the Alps, to over 2000m.

Habitat:

Alpine meadow, alt. 2000 m.

Notes:

The ant in the last 2 shots proceeded to climb up the butterfly's head and then stepped down. The butterfly didn't bulge; it showed little activity as it was still in the shade on a cool morning.
In North America this butterfly is known as the Common Branded Skipper or Holarctic Grass Skipper, as there Epargyreus clarus, a spread-winged skipper, also has the common name of "Silver-spotted Skipper".
