Prong-billed Barbet

"Our Spotting of the Day has given taxonomists food for thought! Restricted to humid highland forests of Costa Rica and Panama, the Prong-billed Barbet (Semnornis frantzii) was historically placed with all other barbets in the large Capitonidae family. DNA and morphology studies revealed this family to be made of distinct lineages, and together with the toucan-barbet (Semnornis ramphastinus), the prong-billed barbet was recently placed in the family Semnornithidae. The prong-billed barbet has a distinctive thick bill, where the lower mandible has two little prongs and the upper mandible a hook that fits between these prongs. This arrangement facilitates the slicing and dicing of fruits that make the prong-billed barbet's diet".
