Field Notes

Description:

An Australian native bee that resembles a bumblebee in shape, and is covered in orange-brown fur. The abdomen has several dark hairless bands, seven in the case of males, six for females. It is similar in size to a European honeybee

Habitat:

I have noticed two to three of these bees roosting in my garden at night for around 3 weeks, but only earlier this evening have I finally managed to get a decent photo of them. The generally roost at least a meter off the ground preferring to hold onto small twigs

Thank you Neil. Yes I love the common name. I've been trying for years to get a photo of them. Have seen them flying around my garden for years, but never saw one stopping at a flower. It was a thrill to notice some roosting in my garden :-)
This is now my favourite bee. How could it not be with a name like Teddy Bear Bee :) Great spotting, James.
