Field Notes

Description:

Adults grow to just under 40cm. Long thin beak (black), commonly has all-white head, white nexk, black behind head & down neck, sometimes with open black chest band & white band across upper back. Long pink coloured legs useful for wading in water of depth. Waterbird or wader collects food from water and sand such as shrimp, small crustaceans, insects.

Habitat:

Found throughout Australia and in several countries overseas including New Zealand. Populations tend to follow plentiful water and rain as inland lakes and waterways fill, particularly salt lakes. This one found in arid inland of north east South Australia in small salt/clay pan filled with recent rainwater beside unsealed road.
