Field Notes

Description:

This periwinkle (lesser or dwarf) is an evergreen perennial flowering plant belonging to a family Apocynaceae. Forms dense massifs and grows up to 35 - 40 cm in height; and produce five-petaled blue solitary flowers of some 2-3cm in diameter. Looks totally like Vinca major (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/772796981) except of reduced size in all parts.

Habitat:

Native to Central Europe; observed on a forest floor, growing in shade, in a beautiful 'Bois du Faisan' forest (mainly broadleaved forest close to Versoix, Switzerland)), in a valley of lake Geneva, just in between Jura and Alps mountains ranges.

Notes:

Containing a large number of alkaloids, periwinkle has found the use in medicine.
