Common Spider Crab
Libinia emarginata
40.4424, -74.0584
Field Notes
Description:
Libinia emarginata is roughly triangular in outline and very heavily calcified, with a carapace about 4 in (100 mm) long and a leg span of 12 inches (300 mm). The whole crab is khaki, and the carapace is covered in spines and tubercles, and, as with other decorator crabs, often clothes itself in debris and small invertebrates. -Wiki
Habitat:
Atlantic Coast of North America to depths of 160'. This individual was hanging out in our oyster cage for oyster restoraton, Sandy Hook Bay.
Notes:
I'm not absolutely positive that this isn't Libinia dubia since it is covered in barnacles. I really like these spider crabs because they have the habit of decorating themselves with flora and fauna of their environment.
